1: Children in America Ask for Pictures of Their Parents in Europei
My dear parents!
Itâs already been several times, dear parents, that in my letters I have asked you to do me a big favor and send me your beautiful pictures (photographs).ii I was also asking for this on behalf of dear sister Khane, may she live, who hasnât seen your radiant likeness for 8 years, and I donât know and canât begin to understand why you donât respond to me about this in your letters to me, my dear parents! If to you it is a mere trifle and an insignificant matter, which, in your opinion, isnât worth writing about (and isnât worth the paper, ink, and time), well, for me and also for dear Sister, it is a matter of the greatest interest. Imagine the happiness it would bring me, if every day when I got out of bed, I could look at your dear pictures. I would no longer consider myself lonely in this big, wide country; I would feel at home if my dear, beloved parentsâ pictures decorated and illuminated my lonely little room. . . . The same goes for my dear sister, who would probably take great delight in the pleasure of having your beloved pictures in her house. And so, why wonât you grant the wish of your children, whom you love and whom you want to be happy?
We hope that this wonât take long and that we will have, in our homes, two beautiful and refined guests; that is, dear parents, your beautiful pictures, which are impatiently awaited.
Eliezer Kahan
